After the collection, you send the blood to the specified laboratory. Only a few days later you will receive the results with your vitamin D value.

It is not the actual vitamin D that is measured, but the vitamin’s stored form. The storage form is called 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (short: 25 (OH) D).

This value is more representative because this type of storage is not a snapshot like the vitamin D storage. 25 (OH) D is a precursor of vitamin D, which is stored in the blood and converted into the active vitamin D form when required.

Your self-assessment is also relevant. With questions like “Am I enough in the sun?” or “Do I use sunscreen when I’m in the sun” (sunscreen prevents the production of vitamin D in the skin) you can guess whether your vitamin D level is sufficient or not.

Which dose is right for me?

Organizations disagree on the recommended daily intake.

However, other specialists, such as the Vitamin D Council, advise that the need be based on personal value. Because many experts today agree that the recommended daily amount is too low.

It should also be noted that vitamin D toxicity can only occur from an amount of 40,000 to 50,000 IU per day. That means: only at these values can the ingested amount be harmful to the body. And even this only for a longer period of time.

Studies have shown that in certain diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and prostate cancer, an increased intake can even have a positive effect. However, you should always discuss the increase in intake with your doctor.

In what form can vitamin D be taken?

Compared to vitamin D2, vitamin D3 can be better absorbed and used.

In order to regulate the vitamin D level, it is therefore advisable to take vitamin D3. Nowadays, vitamin D3 is often used in food supplements and medicinal products anyway.
